Making up part of MOD’s ‘Invisibility’ exhibition, ‘Beneath the Surface’ is an immersive exhibit which draws on our human experience and provides a sensory portal into the intersection between scientific research, evolutionary processes, micro and macro environments, and the critical role of imagination in understanding our world.

Drawing on the idea of invisible systems, ‘Beneath the Surface’ considers the interdependent networks between terrestrial and subterranean landscapes, the Earth’s crust and it’s impacts on climate change, and the relationship between scientific data and imagination. By making visible the invisible, this exhibition positions these critical yet unseen relationships in a new light.

The works of art included in the exhibit play on illusions of scale and draw on the sensory interplay of heat and light to create an immersive and otherworldly experience. This exhibit draws attention to the invisible networks which are constantly in motion – whether they are behind us, below us or in front of us.
